Description
Course Overview:
The Level 3 Emergency First Aid + Forestry + Aerial Rescue Refresher/Casualty Simulation course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and competence to handle emergency first aid situations within forestry and agricultural environments. This two-day course offers both theoretical and practical training, culminating in a hands-on casualty simulation to reinforce key skills. The training ensures participants are equipped to respond to life-threatening incidents, with a specific focus on forestry-related injuries, aerial rescue procedures, and remote medical assistance.
The first day of training covers Emergency First Aid at Work + Forestry, with content based on the Forestry Commission’s First Aid Policy 2015. The second day focuses on practical applications, including Aerial Rescue refresher training and casualty simulation exercises. This course is ideal for individuals working in industries with a high risk of accidents, including forestry, arboriculture, and agriculture.
Course Objectives:
- To understand the responsibilities and procedures for providing emergency first aid in the workplace, especially within forestry and agricultural environments.
- To gain specific knowledge in handling injuries commonly encountered in forestry and agricultural settings, such as catastrophic bleeding, crush injuries, and shock.
- To be able to apply emergency first aid techniques to a variety of scenarios, including minor injuries, burns, choking, and medical conditions like epilepsy.
- To develop skills in aerial rescue procedures and practice casualty simulations that reflect real-life incidents in forestry and climbing environments.
- To gain practical experience in casualty simulation, ensuring participants can react appropriately in emergency situations.
Course Content:
Emergency First Aid:
- Responsibilities and Reporting: Understand the legal and professional responsibilities of a first aider and how to report incidents.
- Resuscitation: Learn the correct CPR techniques, including the use of AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators).
- Assessment of the Situation: Assess the scene of an emergency and evaluate the casualty’s condition.
- Anatomy & Physiology: Basic understanding of human anatomy relevant to first aid situations.
- Dealing with an Unresponsive Casualty: Techniques for managing unconscious casualties and ensuring their safety.
- Minor Injuries: How to treat cuts, bruises, sprains, and other minor injuries.
- Basic Hygiene in First Aid: Understanding hygiene principles to prevent infection when administering first aid.
- Bleeding Control: Techniques for controlling minor and major bleeding, including the use of bandages and dressings.
- Burns: Immediate care for burns and scalds.
- Choking: Techniques for managing choking incidents.
- Epilepsy: How to manage a casualty who is having a seizure.
- Shock: Identifying and treating shock, ensuring the casualty’s condition does not worsen.
Forestry First Aid:
- Catastrophic Bleeding Control: Use of tourniquets and haemostatic agents to control severe bleeding.
- Crush Injuries: How to treat and manage crush injuries, particularly relevant in forestry environments.
- Shock: Treatment for shock, including recognising early signs and stabilising the casualty.
- Emergency Planning & Remote Medical Assistance: Understanding how to coordinate emergency planning in remote forestry locations and access medical help.
- Dealing with an Unresponsive Casualty: Practical techniques for handling unconscious casualties in remote settings.
- Effects of Extreme Cold: Recognizing and treating hypothermia and frostbite in outdoor environments.
- Lyme Disease: How to recognize and treat Lyme disease, which is common in forestry and rural areas.
- Minor Injuries: Treatment for minor injuries typically encountered in forestry, such as cuts, bruises, and sprains.
Aerial Rescue Refresher / Casualty Simulation:
- Updating Aerial Rescue Skills: Refresh key techniques for rescuing casualties from trees, including the safe use of ropes, harnesses, and other climbing equipment.
- Practical Training Using Casualty Simulations: Participate in realistic simulations of accidents that commonly occur in forestry and climbing environments, such as falls, cuts, and injuries.
- Incorporating Emergency Planning: Practice emergency planning skills to ensure the safety of both the casualty and the rescuer during aerial rescue scenarios.
- Post-Incident Management: Learn how to manage the aftermath of an incident, including reporting, debriefing, and ensuring the appropriate care for the injured.
Assessment: Participants will be assessed through both practical and theoretical components to demonstrate their competence in emergency first aid, forestry-specific first aid, and aerial rescue procedures. The practical assessments will include casualty simulations and aerial rescue techniques, ensuring candidates are fully prepared for real-world emergencies.
By the end of this course, participants will have the skills and knowledge to handle life-threatening incidents in forestry and agricultural environments, provide immediate and effective first aid, and carry out aerial rescues and casualty management. This qualification is essential for those working in high-risk industries such as forestry, arboriculture, and other outdoor sectors.
