Course Overview:
The City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross Cutting (Unit 0039-20, formerly CS30) is an intensive two-day course designed for individuals new to chainsaw use or those looking to enhance their skills in chainsaw operation and maintenance. This course focuses on essential maintenance procedures and safe crosscutting techniques for hardwood and softwood stems up to 15 inches in diameter.
Whether you’re learning how to operate a chainsaw for the first time or need to refine your existing abilities, this course provides a solid foundation for maintaining and using chainsaws safely and effectively. By the end of the course, participants will be fully prepared to take assessments for NPTC Units CS 30.1 and CS 30.2, making it an essential step in becoming a competent chainsaw operator.

Course Objectives:
- To master essential chainsaw safety protocols and practices to ensure safe operation.
- To gain hands-on experience in routine and periodic maintenance of chainsaws for peak performance.
- To learn how to perform pre-operation checks, ensuring the chainsaw is safe and ready for use.
- To develop the skills to crosscut timber (up to the guide bar length in diameter) accurately and efficiently.
- To understand how to measure, stack, and present crosscut timber according to operational or habitat specifications.
- To learn how to safely remove branches (snedding) from felled trees, meeting industry safety standards.
This course is also an important step toward more advanced qualifications, such as the City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm (Unit 0039-21 – CS31).
Course Content:
- Chainsaw Regulations & Safety: Learn the essential regulations and industry best practices to ensure safe chainsaw operation and maintenance.
- Chainsaw Preparation & Maintenance: Gain practical experience in preparing and maintaining your chainsaw, including checking the cutting system and performing necessary adjustments for optimal performance.
- Operational Chainsaw Checks: Become proficient in performing pre-operation checks on your chainsaw to ensure it is in safe working order before use.
- Timber Cross-Cutting: Learn how to safely and accurately crosscut timber to the required length and diameter, using efficient techniques while adhering to safety standards.
- Timber Stacking & Presentation: Understand the correct methods for stacking and presenting crosscut timber, ensuring it is ready for subsequent extraction or processing to specified industry standards.
- Branch Removal (Snedding): Develop the skills to safely remove branches from felled trees, ensuring safety and quality standards are met during the snedding process.
Assessment: Participants will complete practical assessments to demonstrate their competence in chainsaw maintenance and cross-cutting, preparing them for the NPTC CS30 assessments.
Upon completion, delegates will have the foundational skills required to operate and maintain chainsaws safely and effectively, setting them up for success in both entry-level and advanced chainsaw operations.
