Brief Description

Formerly known as CS39, this qualification involves the use of a chainsaw and is designed for arborists, tree surgeons, people who have jobs that require tree climbing or people wishing to enter the Arborist industry. It provides a range of skills from the removal of single limb/parts of tree canopy to the complete removal of trees without the use of rigging equipment. It is also covers the removal of tree sections from the crown using free-fall or hand thrown techniques. You will be taught to carry out a tree hazard evaluation and perform a ‘working at height’ assessments. This climbing courses is very physical and candidates must be fit and able to carry out the tasks required of the course.  ConteCoursent: HSE legislation and safety guidelines Safety considerations to be observed in organising a worksite and ground staff briefings. Check and prepare the chainsaw for intended operations. Use appropriate positioning for working in the tree including changing work position for cutting. Demonstrate the appropriate use of various cuts on target limbs. Use chainsaws in a safe and efficient manner to remove light and medium weight branches. Equipment inspection, storage and waste disposal. Use of tools in a tree. Remove limbs using handheld and free fall techniques.

Course Overview:

The City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in Tree Climbing and Rescue (Unit 0039-22, formerly CS38) is an intensive and physically demanding week-long course designed for individuals who need to develop the skills required to access trees safely using rope and harness and perform aerial rescue operations. This hands-on course introduces participants to a wide range of climbing equipment and techniques, with a strong emphasis on safety and efficient practices.

By the end of the course, delegates will have the confidence and competence to safely climb trees, rescue injured climbers from the crown of a tree or a standing pole, and carry out other related operations. This course is essential for tree care professionals, arborists, and those who may need to perform emergency rescues in tree-climbing scenarios.

Course Objectives:

  • To safely access a tree using rope and harness and perform aerial rescue operations.
  • To understand the relevant legislation related to tree climbing.
  • To identify and select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for climbing operations.
  • To master a range of tree climbing knots and their proper use.
  • To manage hazards and risks associated with tree climbing.
  • To carry out visual tree inspections to assess climbing suitability and identify potential dangers.
  • To ensure climbing equipment is in good condition through pre-use inspections.
  • To select appropriate anchor points for safe climbing.
  • To use safe and effective techniques for ascending and descending trees.
  • To understand the responsibilities and duties of a competent grounds person.
  • To establish safe and comfortable work positions within the tree.
  • To use climbing irons (spikes) efficiently and safely.
  • To carry out various aerial rescue techniques for climbers in distress.
  • To properly store and maintain climbing equipment.

  • Climbing Knots: Master a range of tree climbing knots, including how to tie, dress, and set them for safe and efficient climbing.
  • Hazard Identification & Risk Management: Learn how to identify hazards on-site and effectively manage the associated risks to ensure safe climbing operations.
  • Visual Tree Inspection: Gain the skills to carry out a visual tree inspection to assess tree health and suitability for climbing.
  • Climbing Equipment Inspection: Perform pre-use inspections of climbing equipment to ensure all gear is in safe working order before use.
  • Anchor Point Selection: Learn how to select appropriate and secure anchor points for safe climbing.
  • Ascent & Descent Techniques: Use safe and efficient techniques for climbing and descending trees, including proper rope management and body positioning.
  • Grounds Person Duties: Understand the role of a competent grounds person in supporting climbing operations, including communication and safety responsibilities.
  • Work Positioning & Comfort: Establish safe and comfortable work positions within the tree to ensure optimal working conditions during tasks.
  • Climbing Irons (Spikes) Usage: Learn how to use climbing irons (spikes) safely and efficiently for tree access and work positioning.
  • Aerial Rescue Techniques: Practice various aerial rescue techniques to safely rescue an injured climber from a tree crown or standing pole.
  • Climbing Equipment Storage: Learn the best practices for storing climbing equipment appropriately, ensuring longevity and safety.

 

Assessment: Participants will undergo both practical and theoretical assessments to demonstrate their competence in tree climbing and rescue techniques, in preparation for the NPTC Unit 0039-22 certification.
