Course Overview:
The Level 2 Refresher in Chainsaw Maintenance, Cross Cutting, and Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm is a comprehensive 1-day training course designed for individuals who already hold relevant NPTC certification (CS30 & CS31 / Units 0039-20 & 0039-21) and wish to update, refresh, and consolidate their existing skills and knowledge.
This course revisits essential techniques in chainsaw maintenance, crosscutting, and felling, with a strong emphasis on current industry best practices, safety standards, and efficient working methods. It is ideal for operators returning to chainsaw use after a break, or those needing to maintain competence in line with industry expectations and employer requirements.
Whether you are working in forestry, arboriculture, or land-based industries, this refresher training ensures your skills remain safe, effective, and up to date.
Course Objectives:

- To revisit safe snedding techniques in line with current safety standards.
- To refresh knowledge and practical ability in felling trees up to 380mm in diameter.
- To improve hazard awareness, site assessment, and risk control measures.
- To revisit techniques for dealing with tension and compression in timber.
- To reinforce safe methods for dealing with hung-up trees using appropriate tools.
- To maintain high standards of manual handling and timber stacking.
- To promote confidence and competence in practical chainsaw operations.
Course Content:
- Chainsaw Regulations & Safety Standards: Refresher on current legislation, safety standards, and industry best practices. Includes PPE requirements, safe systems of work, and operator responsibilities.
- Risk Assessment & Emergency Procedures: Review of site-specific risk assessments, hazard identification, and control measures. Includes emergency planning and refresher on first-response procedures.
- Chainsaw Maintenance & Pre-Operational Checks: Practical refresher on maintenance routines including chain sharpening, tensioning, guide bar checks, and safety feature inspection to ensure optimal performance.
- Timber Cross-Cutting Techniques: Revisit safe and efficient cross-cutting methods, focusing on accuracy, saw control, and managing tension and compression in timber.
- Snedding & Stem Crosscutting: Refresher on safe and efficient branch removal and processing techniques to industry standards.
- Felling Techniques for Trees up to 380mm: Practical revision of felling cuts, tree assessment, and control techniques for both straight and leaning trees. Emphasis on precision and safety.
- Hung-Up Tree Removal Methods: Review of safe techniques and correct tool use for dealing with lodged trees without mechanical assistance.
- Timber Stacking & Manual Handling: Reinforcement of safe lifting techniques and effective timber stacking methods to reduce risk of injury.
Assessment:
This refresher course is non-assessed; however, continuous instructor feedback will be provided throughout to ensure safe working practices and correct technique.
Participants may choose to undertake formal reassessment with City & Guilds NPTC if certification renewal or proof of competence is required.
Upon completion, delegates will have refreshed their practical skills and theoretical knowledge, ensuring continued safe and effective chainsaw operation in line with current industry standards.
